Photo Of The Month - November 2012 Entries

Post by Geo Ghost »

Evening all.
Here we are once again. Entries for month are now open.

The theme for this month is Speed - High speed or low speed. Make what you will of the title. Be creative ;) Set by last months winner, Geo Ghost.
Hmm, that feels weird saying my name in the 3rd person :?

Encase you're new, or need a refresh...
Rules can be found Here.
Please read and familiarise yourselves with them if you haven't before.
Previous winners can also be found on that page.

How to enter:
Easy - simply upload your image to this topic to enter or link it from a trusted site such as flickr, photobucket, DeviantArt, your personal website etc.
Uploading is preferred as it keeps things together. If you're linking from a URL, having a small 'preview' image and a link to a high-res image would be helpful.
If uploading direct to the wiki:
I like to keep entries in a certain named format for organisation reasons as well as keeping record of them in the entries topic and here. If you prefer to upload to the wiki, please keep it in the same naming format as other entries and inform me they are already on the wiki. Name format is - month|year|POTM_user name.
For example: 1112POTM_DaveW.jpg / 1112POTM_orudge.jpg / 1112POTM_GeoGhost.jpg / 1112POTM_Ameecher.jpg
You get the idea ;)

If you upload to the wiki with a different format, I will have to re-upload the image again with the right name. Sorry to be picky, but I want to keep all the entries organised and in the same manner.

At the end of the month, this topic will close and a voting topic will be started with all the entries in for people to choose their top one.
All entries will be uploaded to the tt-forums wiki and stored there for voting and also for archive.
Entries close on the last day of the month, voting will be available till the 7th of each month (approximately).
The winner will need to contact me about what they want the next theme to be and then that will be posted in the entry topic for the next month. Then we repeat from there. Simple. :D

If you wish to change your entry, you may so long as the entries are still open. Simply upload a new one to the topic and remove your old one.

Good luck everyone and don't forget!

POTM Rules wrote:11. Previously entered photos can be re-entered for other themes if it fits. However, winning entries may not be re-entered again.
Providing it's not too recent :)

However, if you can go out and get a new photo or find something different, I'd strongly recommend that :D

I join this round, with a picture I took some weeks ago while waiting for my train. It is one of the new Dutch highspeed trains (Fyra) during a test run.

Never joined the competition here before, so a first try. Also with a Fyra...

Ps. Is the edge allowed or should I try to find the clean version?

Grand Central Station.

Shutter Speed of 1"3. No photo editing apart from basic colour levels.

Apologies for the graininess, my camera is only the size of a credit card.

Yes, that´s a very nice photo indeed. Funny to see how many people take pictures there btw, I briefly counted 3 others holding a camera on your photo.

Thanks guys :)

I wasn't the only one taking photos from that balcony! While it was technically an Apple Store, everyone leaning on the handrail had a camera of some sort!

Uploading this one to here as I've made a slight change to the original photo as taken (just cropped, calm down).

This shot is of PN116 and a Permanent Speed Restriction board at the bottom of Fishergate Bank on the Preston Dock Line, taken from Strand Road Crossing. Once a bustling area, the docks have now succumbed to the inevitable commercial redevelopment. However, the line was safeguarded through to a small yard on the other side of the docks which led to the Total bitumen plant. Once upon a time, wagons would cross an open road crossing right into the plant itself. These days there is a short pipeline from the siding that crosses over the road, and the Ribble Steam Railway operates from the yard.

The Dock Line is quite interesting - it has one of the very few (if any other) combined road/rail swing bridges in the UK, and is one of the few private lines where main line trains regularly run. Trains run down to the sidings beyond Strand Road "if required" on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A small diesel locomotive takes charge of the loaded tanks over the swing bridge and onto the yard for processing. The main line loco (usually a 66, although 60s occasionally rock up) takes the empties. The crossing itself is highly unusual as it curves. On the opposite side to this photo, the railway turns to run parallel to the roadway.

The signal and level crossing are controlled from Preston signal box. Once the train has passed the signal, it maintains the 20mph limit through Fishergate tunnels, up a rather steep incline to the mainline, where it joins the slow lines heading south out of the city's railway station.

This shot was taken on 26th July 2008, bizarrely with a 3.2mp Nokia N73. How times have changed.

Haha, I took pretty much the same picture from the other side. But yours is better, because you don't see the apple shop on it.
