Railway Magazine: June '12.

Class 70 no 018 has caught fire somewhere in the South of England, (Edit: between Basingstoke and Winchester) on an intermodal run.

It was towed to Southampton Maritime later in the day to be inspected by Hampshire Fire and Rescue.

As a result, several 70s have been stopped for checks.

Pics and full story to follow.

EDIT: I have just found out that also 70 007 has also had a minor related problem, while working a freightliner.

EDIT2: And 70 016 - Thanks to A321Pilot

Your thoughts.

Yeah, American crap that along with its sister Class 66 have saved British freight operations. 40% availability of the 56s and 58s wasn't good enough was it? Haha.

Well, yeah, there is that. From what I heard thought the Class 66's never had the same problems, you may know different. Anyway, It might not be bad that all of the Fugly's burn out, I hate the Looks of them. Haha.

Well, these are the first that we know of - 012 was hardly the loco's fault haha, and they've only just started happening.

Teething problems happen. It took a couple of years to bed the 60s in. Again, the 66s broke the mould and slipped straight into service, of sorts.

There was more when they just arrived and the Engines were not Producing enough Power as they were supposed to at first. They had to stop using them over Lickey and re-route via the long way because of it. I can't believe nothing has happened to 013 yet, with 13 being an unlucky number and such, haha.

Another one set on fire?
I always said we shouldn't buy American locos and that we should go by our own.
Now going to go and give a "I told you so" speech to someone because I'm an ass like that.

It is quite concerning the number of problems they are having with these locos. I would have thought they'd take all the 70s out of service till they figure out what's wrong with them.

Yawn.

Once again, I will point out that the AMERICAN Class 66 saved the UK freight industry.

Ok, the 66 I do like :P

But still, I always prefer the idea of us designing and building our own locos.
At least the 70s aren't getting dropped in ships any more.

On a related note, didn't the 60s have a similar issue regarding catching fire?

No, just plenty of 60s have put a leg out of bed; probably because of their work rates. That's why some were earmarked for the scrapman. They're refurbing 15-20.

60081 is the one that always sticks out; in GWR green? Massive engine failure haha...

66s were a tried and tested design shoe-horned into a UK loading gauge. The 70 is something different by adopting engines that have previously only seen maritime use and are generally a different beast when coping with the loadings of rail roles.

But weren't the Deltics similar to the Fuglys in the fact that they had Maritime Engine in them. As far as I know the Deltics were great whereas the Fuglys are crap.
