Olympic Javelin train service could be overwhelmed
Article here from the Guardian - Olympic Javelin train service could be overwhelmed during Games
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/ma ... NTCMP=SRCH
Key points:
6 min journey
12tph
10 coaches
No priority boarding for Olympic officials.
I highly doubt the last one though! I'm still amazed at the whole scheme though. They're effectively running a metro service here using HSR stock!
(Let's not have Alan Fry-esque suggestions here about "my plans are..." etc, since we're talking about REALITY here and none of us are going to change what goes on because the plans are so set in stone).

HS1, from experience, is certainly a very reliable, fast and comfortable service.
I'm sure it'll be able to cope to be honest. It's not like we're expect new-years eve numbers
However, I will say one thing. Stratford 'International' is a bloody ugly looking station. Just a concrete box when you arrive there. Glad international traffic doesn't stop there. Imagine looking at that thing as you first step onto the UK. It's ghastly. Above the platforms may be different, I hope. But the sides and such.. yuk! What a horrible looking thing. Get some damn panels down the sides Make it look a bit more modern and more welcoming.
Commuter platforms are very spacious though. I will give them that. So for dealing with numbers, I'm certain the services will be able to cope reasonably well.
The underground though... that's a whole different matter. I am concerned that they won't cope as well as they are making out they'll be able to. We shall see I guess...

their doubting the capacity really??
from the article they seem to estimate around 1000 passengers (sitting and standing combined) on a 6 minute journey every 5 minutes.
how long are these queues going to be then?? 12000 if you are queueing for an hour...

I'm going to laugh if hardly anyone turns up for the games. As much as I wouldn't want to, I would find such hilarious at first.

I don't think that "hardly anyone" will turn up at the games. But London is a city with lots of tourists, and lots of "general" tourists which are not interested in the games will probably go there another time. Lots of smaller cities have already managed to host the games without descending into chaos.

You'll find that these games will be an unreserved success - people have been bitching about it for years but in truth these games will be an amazing way of bringing the country together in these tough times.

I have tickets for the Badminton Mens Finals (which will undoubtedly by Malaysia vs. China, a game which I have interest in for reasons far beyond Badmindton). So just because you don't have tickets, doesn't mean that noone has tickets!

Hopefully, It'll get our Economy Kickstarted enough to bring both Britain and the rest of Europe out of this Downturn, I personally, have no interest in the Olympics.

Re: Olympic Javelin train service could be overwhelmed
But it wouldn't because everything in Westfield exists in every other shopping centre in Western Europe. People from the continent will shop in London for the bespoke boutique of Oxford Street and Bond Street, not just a standard shopping mall in East London, you're getting more deluded by the day!
Re: Olympic Javelin train service could be overwhelmed
I think London itself would be a more enticing shopping destination than ruddy Stratford..Alan Fry wrote:At least at Stratford has a shopping centre nearby, now if Eurostar has International service it would be a great shopping destination for Europeans!
I don't blame Eurostar for not wanting services there. It's a bit strange not to for the Olympics maybe, but it's too many stops on route to justify it. Especially when St Pancras as so close. Plus Stratford int. just looks a horrible station. I certainly wouldn't be too happy being dropped off there on international traffic.
