from stockholm to åre [prounounced oure] -Sweden. The company was a company called Veolia which is pretty interesting since the national train company in sweden SJ got monopoly on swedish railways. anyway it was a rebuilt regional train (i don't know train classes too well ^^'') with passenger sleeping cars. The trip was about 660 kilometers which is about 410 miles. Anyway the trip was truly awful in overfull cabs with 6 beds each in an area of 6 sqm or 64.5 sqf and it was soo hot in the cabs, couldn't sleep :/. Well the trip was worth it and i'm enyoing my stay in åre

Last journey was Aberdeen to Edinburgh on ScotRail. Currenty on a Super Voyager from Edinburgh to Crewe, in first class as well. Then a wait of 50 minutes or so before my train to Flint. Going to have New Year with my Dad and Grandad.

On Thursday (the 29th)
Leeds - Wakefield Kirkgate = 158815
Wakefield Kirkgate - Huddersfield = 158848
Huddersfield - Manchester Piccadilly = 185128

Kirkgate needs a Major Revamp, especially seeing as how many people want the Grand Central service to London whilst I was there.

Hatfield - Kings Cross
Journey was alright. No seats but standing in the doorway wasn't too bad. Plenty of space!

Kings Cross - Hatfield.
Last train back. Good god. It's almost impossible to describe this one.
Quite possibly the worst train journey I've ever had in my life. This one really tops everything.
Try to vision this... hundreds of people coming back from new years celebrations - One 4 coach unit.
Luckily I thought ahead and made a guess that it was going to be on a certain platform (based on the type of unit and what else was around) so me and my friends managed to get a spot in the doorway isle again.
However, hundreds from the departure board area came running down and all piled on the train. We were completely squashed onto the train - made worse by more people trying to push on and almost crushing me and other against the other doors and other people - I could hardly breathe at some points and this was before we left Kings Cross. I've never been so cramped in my life. I could only move my fingers and my head whilst having someones hair in my face the entire journey (fortunately it smelled nice, but still...).

At Finsbury Park, people tried to get on but it didn't happen. There was just no space what so ever at all.

On the plus note though, it's funny to look back on. Not a nice experience but had to laugh about it as it was just so unreal. And the fireworks in London were pretty damn awesome! :D

London Euston - Birmingham New Street
First Class

We found cheap First Advance tickets £20 each to come back from London (which weren't that much more than the Standard which would have been about £15) so we decided to go for it. Well worth it since it was still the weekday service which includes full tea, coffee and cold food service. Using the First Class lounge at Euston was a nice bonus with the glass of orange juice, coffee and slice of cake :)

Newton Abbot - Reading - Guildford

Normal HST / 165 combo.

The train from Reading was 35 minutes late due to signal failure at Crowthorne and slippery railhead conditions, hence I was stood in the rain for nearly an hour. Not so fun.

When I was travelling back to Guildford this Wednesday, even thought it was VERY windy, because it was coming from the West the sea was flat calm. Its when you get very strong wind coming from the East or South East it gets interesting...

So no Waves over the top them. Was down there in late October and it was alright except for two days.

No, no waves over the top. Tbh it doesn't happen very often and when it does it can cause loads of disruption. If the waves aren't too bad they run both lines but with a speed restriction I think. If the waves are a bit too bad for this they'll close the down line and the up line is bidirectionally signalled. If it is too bad even for this it is all closed and rail replacement busses are used.

The problem a few years ago was that the then new voyagers weren't particularly well equipped for dealing with the water, which I believe caused lots of failures (electrical ones if I remember right) in the conditions, also a voyager caught fire on the sea wall somewhere, whether this was in stormy conditions I no longer remember.

Also I saw a loaded log train at Newton Abbot (on platform 3) which was stopped there for at least 15 minutes, I've never seen one before, any ideas why it was there and why was it stopped for so long?

Do believe that salt in the spray got into the systems and it all went wrong?

Didn't know any logs came up from the south west...

Perhaps they were from fallen trees after the battering this area took from the wind?

No, it was proper sawn logs and stuff, also from the fact it was on Platform 3 (which is the most used) means it is likely to have come from the Heathfield branch as I believe the trains can only access platform 3 which would allow a run around - I was in the café, so I didn't see exactly what was happening...

Yeah, they often cut them down into proper logs. Can't really carry them around with bits of cars hanging off them!

The logs are a fairly new scheduled service to Chirk I think.

Suttgart - Lorch; usually not worth mentioning, but they forgot to turn on the lights inside the train - most relaxing ride I ever had with DB
...now on to Göppingen - Munich. Probably 2 hours of standing, stupid Sunday connection

€: took a later train. Totally worth the wait. Stupid IC seats are getting more uncomfortable ever time, though...

Guildford - London Waterloo on 444032 - Stood the whole way. Very hot. 5 carriages during evening peak is insufficient.

London Waterloo - Guildford on 4440XX - Had seats which was appreciated. Still people were standing due to only being 5 carriages even though it was 9.30pm departure from London.
