A map of the area surrounding Casnewydd in 1985. Many of the lines to the valleys are much quieter than 40 years ago.

To the south of Casnewydd Bay, the old steel mill at Llanelli is still visible, though it lies derelict and unused. The other mill at Maesteg to the right of the picture still receives ore from England to the east and coal from the valleys.

That's all for now, I might post some more once I've played past 1985...

Really creative. Great story and I love the treatment of the screenshots - the 1970 and 1985 colour shots are especially realistic looking!

It's been a while, but here's some screenshots of my last game...

The scenario is a custom map loosely based upon the Scandinavian region around Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmo in Sweden.

The network in 1970. Hedesø is the capital of the southern land. The city itself is centred around a large island and for many decades, it's history has involved shipping and trading. A mainline runs from the central terminus, southwest through Karlsholm and Rodelund to the other side of the country. To the north, across the sound, is the smaller city of Okshus. Though not quite as prosperous as it's neighbour, this thriving city also boasts an impressive trading history.

The oil depot at Solsø. Tanker ships deliver oil from overseas to a refinery near Øster Glolunde, to the south east of Hedesø. Trains then transport the petroleum to the Solsø terminal where it is then distributed to the nearby towns. A similar system exists in the North Lands with a terminal at Stubbekøbing.

I'm playing with the fantastic Neighbours are Important game script. I wanted to limit the size of the towns and control which are allowed to grow. By selectively distributing petrol, I'm able to shape the game as I wish.

Fåreberg in 2008. Demand had risen quickly and there was nowhere to expand so the airport was demolished in the 1990s. Now, a new suburb has been developed on the site of the old airport and the town is thriving again. A new larger airport was constructed a few kilometres north near Humledal.

The new airport at Humledal. A new bridge linking the North Lands to the South Lands has been built! The site for this airport was chosen to connect with the new line, and it's station can be seen to the top of the picture.

To the southwest is the local line from Humledal to Hedesø. To the north east is the new connection over the bridge to the the North Lands. To the bottom right of the picture we can see the feeder lines for the bridge. There are express passenger links to Hedesø along with heavy bauxite trains to a new aluminium plant in the South Lands. Frequent goods trains also pass over the bridge.

Brunworth, the centre of the network and the busiest station in 1880. The Central Mainline goes from the north to the south and it is here at Brunworth that changes can be made with the East to West Mainline. In this photo, a freight train carrying metal from the steel mill at Sennwell is about to pass through the station from the south side.

At Lewisborough another steel train passes over the Dunby canal. This short waterway spur joins the main Whitworth canal towards the top of the photograph. The canals used feature as an important network for delivering freight in the region, but with the arrival of the railways, their days appear numbered as traffic falls to an all-time low...

A new railway meets the Central Mainline at Tradnor. Two locomotives can be seen pulling passenger services along the mainline, as the new route deviates towards the west. It passes over a goods line serving the sawmill to the west of the small town. The canal can be seen passing nearby, though all freight arrives and leaves the sawmill via rail now.

An Edwardian Class 4-4-0 thunders through the town of Lewischurch, a few miles south of Brunworth. There is a canal wharf at the mill here. There were plans to link the railway to the mill with a small goods yard, but the railway company dismissed the idea as unprofitable.

A local train leaves Nantstoke as a fast train waits to depart. This area to the north isn't particularly affluent and is mainly rural. There are no coal fields unlike towards the south where coal and ore are plentiful. Central Mainline services terminate here at Nantstoke, where connections can be made to many of the small towns in the region.

It's 1940. A slow coal train heads north towards the large steel mill at Barton near Brunworth. A fast passenger service pulled by a new 4-6-2 "Peregrine" heads south towards Whitworth.

A busy day at Whitworth. On Platform 1, a Royal Scot class is about to make its final stop before heading to the depot of the evening. Another Royal Scot has just departed platform 2 for the final service of the day along the South Eastern Line towards Marningleigh. Platform 3 welcomes a fast passenger train from Nantstoke and Brunworth while as a local train leaves platform 4. Platform 5 is reserved for the railcar which serves the town of Finton along a short branch.

The Central Mainline has been electrified. A new AL1 passenger service pulls away from Lewisbrook. It passes over the canal as a Type 4 diesel pulls empty iron ore wagons back to the pit.

The western region is home to some interesting locomotives. A diesel hydraulic "Western Fortitude" arrives into Greenborough as a Type 3 EE passenger service departs towards Brunworth. A local DMU also trundles past.

A busy scene at Shorwich Junction. Some years ago the canal was rerouted to increase the capacity and increase speeds across the junction. The mainline also now has four tracks. Here "Baby Deltics", AL1 electrics and Type 2 light goods can sometimes be seen. The new motorway with its elegant red bridge crosses the mainline as passengers start to leave the rails and head for the road...
