It's simple but surprisingly useful patch. It draws a grid on the smallmap:

When we are designing our rail network, straight long lines are usually more desired. They're easier, faster, cheapier... The patch allows us to find places good for long straight routes more easily.

The grid has many features and is highly customizable. Each feature is a separate patch.

One thing I didn't say: use [ctrl/shift/ctrl+shift]+[mouse wheel] on the grid to customize it.
These settings (size, contrast, thickness) can be accessed also from Advanced settings -> Display options.
