Like the idea, but I has been discussed before. Can't remember why this wasn't a good idea though :)

this was suggested before and some of the main concerns were the effects on cpu and memory usage, (ie. pretty high for not much benefit) although it was discussed it was never concluded IIRC.

I really think it would be great, regardless of the mem problems (hell, make a switch, try it out, it's worth it).
OTTD worlds seem far too quiet right now. I miss the busy towns with lots of traffic and the odd car passing by a smaller town.

To be honest, I some times think it would be nice to see other traffic on the roads, but then you would end up with problems I have seen on other games (not so much memory related though). Problems such as cars/busses etc going so far along a road out of town the just dissapearing and things like this.

Personally I would say keep the roads clear, just stops little things like cars/busses etc dissapearing 3/4 of the way along a country road. If you want to see realism like that I would suggest Sim City 4.

That little problem could be solved by making sure cars only disappear next to buildings or at the ends of roads. Or something like that.

It's all academic anyway. :)

Non-player?

Post by argie »

How about introduce a non-playing company (doesn't show up on lists, has infinite money) which only manufactures cars using certain rules. (population of town where that company wants cars, ...)

That way it's just the same as introducing a new player, with all the cars being standard vehicles that are just unavailable to everyone except that player.

That neutral player just sets "orders" to go to certain tiles in the city or in other cities (some people like doing long-distance driving)

(OR)

Introduce an option in "configure patches": Enable traffic.
This enables one extra competitor in the game who uses a different AI.

Enable cars for everyone at different dates (just like every other vehicle): They'll have extremely low capacity (2-10) and basically make them completely pointless to use for a normal player. (reduce the capacity, make it 0 even, and make them cost helluva lot)

Make it so that this extra competitor uses a completely different AI that is very simple (as in, not-having-high-ambitions-only-makes-cars simple)

Make it so that AI competitors don't ever use cars. I'm not sure how the AI weights vehicles but maybe weight against these heavily.

Make it so that extra competitor assigns orders to the cars to move to certain tiles, or even certain hidden stations, or existing player stations.

I think only that assign the extra competitor a different AI needs any coding, since we can already have competitors, custom vehicles (using GRFs an' all). That, and the hidden stations (OR) assign orders to coordinate.

Last of all, I don't know much C and I sure as hell won't be able to program. I'm just suggesting a method by which it can be done. Tell me if I said anything stupid :D

Since currenlty there is a limit of 8companies, this would mean that any given game or server would be able to contain one less compan - for little purpose - although this would be good in single player. If the company limit can be raised, that would be a very good idea though
