Base sets do have the tiny cargo icons, but you could have a tough time picking which icon would go with which industry methinks, since they are icons for cargoes and not industries.

How about this idea?:

Number the industries in the dialog (get away from the colors), and create an algorithm to draw lines from the numbers to the industry lot if there's a lot of clutter, so they're spaced out enough.

Then you can press an option to show (or blink, or recolor) the blocks of linked industries, maybe one color for each level of separation of provision (for example, when clicking on an industry in the filter, the number/symbol is highlighted red, the industry(s) it feeds is highlighted yellow, and the industries those feed is highlighted in green, etc.)

Solve the problem a little bit?

I appreciate the idea, but at 2048x2048, and dense industries, you get about 3,500 industries at the map (FIRS, Firs economy). At 4094x4096, it's 4 times that amount, so 14,000 industries.

How about when selecting a cargo chain and linking it to smallmap, producers appear with a small green arrow, and consumers appear with a red one? Or maybe a little like RailroadTycoon3, up arrows for producers, and down arrows for consumers?

Alternatively, when selecting an industry chain, the industries that provide cargo to said industry appear with an up arrow, and industries buying cargo from said industry with a down arrow.

Industries that accept their own production (in cargo chains), or (in industry chain) an industry that both provides and buys from selected industry could be marked with an up/down arrow. Arrows like the ones used to see the loading status of a train.

Partial solution to the FIRS issue of clutter: Why not make a (new) map focused on cargoes rather than industries:
* You have to select a single cargo
* It will highlight producing, consuming and both (e.g. banks for valuables) industries in distinctive colors, e.g. green, red, yellow.

It will make it easy to find efficiently transportable goods.

That feature is already in OpenTTD since version 1.1.0 or 1.2.0 or something. Open Industry Chain window, click on Link to minimap button, then pick either a cargo or industry. Voila, you have a map that basically does that.
