is there a type of railroad signal i can use to stop the road vehicles from crashing into the rails all the damn time? the crossing only lowers when the train is REALLY close, causing crashes a lot more then i would like.

There is problem with crossings. Especially with crossings over several train lanes.

And there is patch for this. But without patching no way to resolve this problem. Build bridges/tunells in problem places.

Try building a path signal before it

Yes, if a path is reserved through the level crossing, the crossing is closed.

Therefore, place a path signal far enough away so all RVs have enough time to clear the crossing.

And no, this is not a glitch.

When path signals are used, crossings will be closed as soon as a train reserves a path through the crossing, even if that train is 20 tiles away at the time.

If path signals are not used, the game has no way of knowing in advance that a train is going to be travelling through the crossing, so the crossing doesn't close until the train is half a tile away. This is TTD behaviour.

So, lawton and Level Crossing (user name is relevant!) are correct. Build path signals, and provide a sufficient distance between the signal and the crossing, and the crossing will close earlier and be safer for RVs.

so, wouldn't that mean the train stops for the RV? (although not that big of a deal, i would rather it be the other way around)

No, the train does not stop for the RV(s). It just means that additional RVs are prevented from entering the crossing.

be aware that doubletracks will turn into even bigger death traps, when using path signals.

If a multi-rail crossing is frequented enough by vehicles that it's causing accidents, then don't allow level crossings across the multiple tracks.

Or use the patch that closes adjacent level crossings at the same time. It is found in Chill's Patchpack, along with many other useful and fun patches that aren't in the standard game.

I avoid level crossings like the plague for this reason - building either road or rail bridges is much, much safer!

[Noob's question] Bridges and tunnels are fine but they do not seem to stop the IA building more roads across your rails, even a few squares afar from your newly built bridges... Looks like crossings spawn from evey single square of road in the vicinity of rails.
I tried deleting and re-building the guilty roads myself, drawing nice straight roads running from one bridge to the other, in hope that the IA would use those pathes instead of building new crossings. Didn't work...
Is there any way to convice the IA NOT to build a road somewhere ?

Yes or yes or no.

No: for the AI you use most probably not.
Yes: But you might try other AIs. I know of AI which actually actively detect such level crossings and replace them by bridges for their vehicles
Yes: Improve the AI(s). Write better code for them so that they re-use existing codes.

you can't really stop AIs from building crossings, but vehicles should prefer the bridges, if the detour is not too long.

All right, thanks for the tips !

What AI(s) would you recommend for the purpose ?

Also, I discovered recently a button in the toolbar allowing me to buy land. It looks like the AI does not build roads through the squares I bought, so maybe buying those squares along the lines in the regions where the AI actively build roads and crossings could stand for an acceptable solution. Of course, cash is not a problem in my current (first) game which has very easy conditions and acts mostly as a sandbox. Not sure the option will be viable in a standard game, though... :?:

I know of another way.

You have your railway and you dig a trench right next to it.
