AY Employees2 server - is it public?

Post by SirkoZ »

Just thought I'd mention - today I updated my stable OpenTTD to 1.0.4 release and went browsing around for multiplayer servers after a long time, just to see if anyone is there and I happened to connect to a server called AY Employees2 server as a spectator and got immediately kicked + banned. While I realise it's not worth my anger - it got me angry enough to write this report.
People should not advertise their server on the multiplayer list (at least not without a joining/server password) unless they intend to have it open to any old spectator that comes by.
Just so you all know.

P.S.: People should not play OpenTTD while being at work, hence the naming - work.

Who are you to decide what people should or should not do, unless you happen to be $deity?
Writing this post cost you far more time than the whole joining+kicking+banning process.

Your use of the imperative again proves my point. I merely selected the parts relevant to my post, in order to avoid other readers wasting their time reading and filtering the information. Wasting someone's time is something you seem very concerned about, so this should be a valid reason to not echo all your words.

In order to stay somewhat on-topic, I would like toss in some random 2cc coins:
  • People may use their breaks to play openttd
  • People may not like the inconvenience of having to remember a server name / password and/or distributing that information around a company.
  • Using 'Employees' in a server name might be an indication that the server is, in fact, meant for employees.

Openttd's server system essentially works in that there are more good servers than bad. Just move on and find another server.
Do not half-
Ok no.

Why bring computer nerd trash into it? I could claim to be $deity and you would have a hard time disproving that as it means nothing.

I'm with Sirko here - if you don't want people to join your server, either password protect it or hide it from public viewing. Why have the ignominy of being removed and banned from a server just because you're not in someone's group. If you'd like people to not spectate, don't leave the server open.

I couldn't care less what you do with your time though.

Perhaps it is Hirundo's server...

Anyway thank you Dave and Killer11 - not for sharing my opinion - but for acknowledging simple and logical step to prevent a non-suspecting spectator from joining a server - a server password. :]

I shall fully quote you this time, although split in two parts for convenience.

Had it been my server, I could obviously have told you...

Of course setting a password is a sensible thing, did I ever state otherwise? I did state that opening a forum topic, merely to vent your frustration about someone doing something non-sensible, might not be that sensible either.

Now let's lay this topic to rest and do something more sensible with our time, such as playing OpenTTD.
