Open TTD Internet problems

Post by TalcM »

So the prob is basicaly that what it says up there. My Tycoon does not want to connect to Internet.
I read and searched on the forums and wiki but sadly I didn't find anything about that.
I have 2 problems. probably they are connected to each other. I'll upload images of that.

1. On multiplayer server finder it does not show any servers.. ( and yes I press the internet option instead of LAN) :S the list is completly empty.
(picture1)

2.My online content doesnt work too. I was clicking this button very fast and it has acctually connected, and I tried to download some scenarios to test if it really works and than, when i pressed download the blu ewindow closed and the red one was showing up again.
(picture2)

All my other online connecting works fine (playing other mp games and browsing,..)

I'm using 0.7.5. , on XP 64-bit, and a few months ago (maximally 6), i had OTTD and I could play online.. (but it was another version).
The pictures I made later so I changed the language to english. In real I'm using Slovenian language (slovenščina).

I read some rules about posting, but I'm not sure if i get them right so please tell me if I made wrong :D

Thanks!

Something on your way might block the packets. How does your network infrastructure looks like? Where do you have firewalls? Maybe you have a firewall somewhere that filters outgoing traffic?

Edit: Please note that 0.7.5 does not use standard HTTP (port 80) for downloading online content. So it might be that you have a firewall that blocks the communication on the ports that OpenTTD uses which are fairly non-standard.

Could be your ISP/router/firewall that does not allow the ports OpenTTD uses (3978 and 3979).

Hmm my network looks like these:

first there is the modem with built-in router there i have a wireless antena and 4 "LAN" connectors. 2 are used for InternetTV, 1 is unused and 1 goes further to a swirch with 8 connectors. (I have two laptops connected to wireless).
On my switch, I have connected two PC's, today I'll connect the third PC which I wanted to use in my garage/workshop and for now it would be used as a server too (maybe even for OTTD).
Those "LAN" connectors are all standard
on modem I have DHCP server on and I use this: DSL (PPPoE bridged) for connecting to central..

about ports.. acctually it is possible i have those blocked / used by another program, cause they are looking really familiar to me.. :S how can I check this? and How to change it if needed?? :S

to now everything was runing ok, even the previous versions of OTTD (0.6.3 or 6.5 i think) :S
sry for bad english

and modem does not have firewall.. it's only windows firewall on my pc :S

i managed somehow to enable these ports in my modem, i locked them (forwarded??) to my PC, put it in exceptions on my firewall and put OpenTTD there too.. but the problem is still same.. :S
I'm using dynamic IP, but my modem remembers name of my PC so everytime I come online, ports are automatically forwarde on my new IP.

guys I really don't know how to fix that and where to serch and search for what.. so please can anyone help me? If problem is in ports, could I change them in OTTD (to use another ports)? and how? :S or can I test if another aplication uses these ports? :S

You shouldn't need to forward the ports in your Router/NAT to your PC. That should only be needed if you want to host a multiplayer game. However what you want to make sure is that those ports are not blocked both in ingoing and outgoing direction.

For validating router forwarding while setting up a server this service can be of help: (however, not as I said before, non-working port forwarding shouldn't be the problem in your case)

ok thanks.. i tried now these with ports forwarded and not forwarded, they are unlocked in firewall... but it still doesnt work.. even with firewall turned off :S
i get these message for both ports:

Error: I could not see your service on 89.143.35.39 on port (3979)
Reason: Connection refused

hmm maybe it's my ISP I'll chek on noIP.com they have an "solution" but if I'll not pay anything :D

edit: I cheked and found nothing.. :S I'll try to get some info if ISP is blocking this :S

Ok, ISP customer help service is mostly down (it's weekend), so lines are really long to get someone on the phone. I'll try contact them tommorow but does anyone hae an idea what could be wrong?? I'll try to reinstall OTTD now.

Could the switch prevent me from using this port? :S

Any idea guys I would really want to play MP side of the game, and SP is not verry good too.. tried downloading some AI's but i get some errors and I think I'll have to do much work to make them run properly.. (my online content service doesn't work so I can't download the files directly.. :S:S)

Nice that you got online content to work.

If you download AIs manually from the AI threads, then you need to find out which libraries they need and download them as well (and place them in a library subdirectory of the ai directory). This could be why you had problems with the AIs before you got online content to work. Online content system automatically selects the needed libraries when you select an AI (if you don't have them already).

ok guys The problem was still showing up, but not so frequently as before...
I tried to connect my computer without switch - drectly to the modem/router.. now everything is working, maybe sometimes it says that connection to server is lost but that is just cause of the laaggggg hehe so the proeblem was in the switch..

switch works like this that he connects anycomputer connected to everyone computer connected... he does that like this that he first connects PC1 to PC2, than PC1 to PC3 and so on..

newer games/programs are made to support this operation, but Ottd possibally has some problems, cause there are miliseconds, when you pc is without internet acess, and ottd can understand this as a lost connection.. :D

so if anyne has similar problem and uses a switch, he should try this and maybe that will help..

Guys thanks for your help and sory for my bad english :D

i have a similar problem here and its caused by a crappy wifi connection.
Ottd has a very short fuse in regard to crappy connections.

yup I think the problem is that it doesnt support newer types of connecting, if there is a small ammount of time, when you loose connection (let's say 2 mili seconds), all other programes run perfect, cause they are made so that this won't turn them off, but ottd can understand this as a turned off connection so he thinks that connection is lost..

programes should do some test with that and try to solve this so anyone that has any programing experience and has some free time could help here.. :D

hehe i think OTTD will be in the world forever.. :D I think more and more people are begining to play this game :D

i dont know last time i raised the issue it was said that ottd use its own protocol with drop time of 30sec or so
but fr me here DL from explorer works, DL from ottd installer works but DL from OTTD itself almost always fails.

IIRC there was a fix some weeks ago to a timeout issue with the file/data transfer protocol in OpenTTD. However I think this fix was on the server side so this fix should have been out for every one a few weeks now. (but I could be wrong that it was only a server-side fix)
