Today we have released the second beta for 1.0.0. It's quite soon, for our betas at least, after the first one, however lots of bugs have been fixed since the first beta.
We are looking for new/extra translators for the following languages, the number of missing strings as of writing is between parentheses:
Bulgarian (139)
Esperanto (507)
Frisian (1734)
Galician (136)
Icelandic (110)
Ido (3089)
Japanese (172)
Lithuanian (127)
Luxembourgish (115)
Macedonian (2662)
Malay (1733)
Persian (1895)
Slovenian (112)
Thai (2383)
Urdu (3018)
Vietnamese (1770)
Welsh (110)
The FAQ of WT3 tells you how to become a translator. The languages not in this either have less than 100 missing strings, or are totally untranslated. See the translation status for more information about the current status of the translations.
Finally we would like to ask whether you can help improve the documentation in the wiki so our new players have a good and up-to-date manual to help them exploring OpenTTD.
Hmm, I should really take a look at how the development been... Last time I played OTTD was 0.6-something ;)
I've been keeping an eye on the road map though... But I must tell I'm a bit surprised to see 1.0 so soon...
I wasn't expecting it for another year or so :O
My understanding was that the "1.0" title was waiting for the game to be fully stand alone. Now that the origional files are no longer needed at all... tada!
If you put them in your shared or personal directory then they will be found by any installation you make. Using the online content download button you can download newer versions of them when they become available.
4.2) OpenTTD directories
---- -------------------------------
The TTD artwork files listed in the section 4.1 "(Required) 3rd party files"
can be placed in a few different locations:
1. The current working directory (from where you started OpenTTD)
2. Your personal directory
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\OpenTTD
Mac OSX: ~/Documents/OpenTTD
Linux: ~/.openttd
3. The shared directory
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\OpenTTD
Mac OSX: /Library/Application Support/OpenTTD
Linux: not available
4. The binary directory (where the OpenTTD executable is)
Windows: C:\Program Files\OpenTTD
Linux: /usr/games
5. The installation directory (Linux only)
Linux: /usr/share/games/openttd
6. The application bundle (Mac OSX only)
It includes the OpenTTD files (grf+lng) and it will work as long as they aren't touched
Notes:
- Linux in the previous list means .deb, but most paths should be similar for others.
- The previous search order is also used for NewGRFs and openttd.cfg.
- If openttd.cfg is not found, then it will be created using the 2, 4, 1, 3, 5 order.
- Savegames will be relative to the config file only if there is no save/
directory in paths with higher priority than the config file path, but
autosaves and screenshots will always be relative to the config file.
The preferred setup:
Place 3rd party files in shared directory (or in personal directory if you don't
have write access on shared directory) and have your openttd.cfg config file in
personal directory (where the game will then also place savegames and screenshots).

Hi guys, this might be a silly question, especially since I already know the Mac OS X port is deprecated.
I notice there isn't a Mac binary... but because the 1.0.0-beta1 had a Mac port, I was wondering will beta2 all have one or did you guys just not bother compiling anymore?
...just asking. Don't flame me if this really is a stupid question!

Hmm, well, in terms of the lack of an OS X developer issue, I can't really help alas, as I have little experience with OS X APIs and so on. I can however build the binaries if that's what's needed. It does seem to be quite bad to not supply a 1.0.0 for OS X, even if it is a bit buggy under certain circumstances.
I'm quite aware of that, indeed. But until such a new developer turns up, I might ask: is it worse to provide a somewhat imperfect version (which somewhat works most of the time, at least in my experience), or no version at all? At least for a major release such as 1.0, I can't help but think that we're cutting out a lot of potential userbase - and potential developers who can fix the outstanding bugs, etc - by not advertising OS X support.
Good to see that we've already got work going on for one of the issues though, so far.
I never had a crash of openttd on Mac. I only have some minor graphical issues but no big game stoppers. I love to see some unsupported mac compiled download
Hello, may I ask something about a new feature from the 1.0.0 beta 1 in here?
I found a new dropbox named "Variety distribution" in the new game dialog, and I don't have any idea that how this option works and how this option changes my gameplay map.
All my attempts to find out some explanation about this feature (and nighly version r18541, the version that this feature was introduced) was failed. OpenTTD wiki's manual for new game screen was outdated...
Can anybody tell me about "Variety distribution"?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Variety distribution is a feature of map generation which gives the option of more variability across the map. If you choose a mountainous landscape with low variety distribution then all of the map will look mountainous. If you chose high variety distribution then you will find the areas of the map which are less mountainous (ie. flat valleys etc.) and areas which are more mountainous (ie. mountain ranges). It aims to give more variety and a more "realistic" landscape...
