The Franchise Game

Post by jvassie »

Recently, after thinking a lot about England's Railways and the various TOC's, i had an idea to create an OTTD multiplayer game, where each player owns a company, that has rights to operating a franchise, ie a route between City A and City B, through Town A, Village A and Town B, for example. In order for you to participate, you must choose one of the routes listed below, not already taken by a player/company, and write a proposal, describing briefly how you intend to operate the franchise, ie company name and code, network details, fleet details, etc. When you have submitted a proposal, and if you are accepted, you will then need to download the zipped file with my ottd version, along with newgrf files needed, config etc. With each Franchise, you have the rights to operate a service at that town or city, also giving you the freedom to operate buses there if you wish to.

Here are the list of Franchises to choose from, and their current company/player.

What are the main grfs you would use? Also, to make this work really well you need some sort of subsidiaries/co-op so that players can share stations. I assume it will be on a server. I dunno, needs a bit more explanation I think.

Edit

My Proposal

Blue Line - Operated by: North Eastern Railway Ltd. [NER] (Ameecher)

Operating Rights in
Bington
Grendinghall
Gunningville
Grendinghead
Chartfingley Market
Fort Fronwood
Wrenbury
Kinnpool
Great Treninghall
Flentfinghill
Condwood
Getfingway-On-Sea
Pinnville
Praningbury
Nunington
Fluningbury
Pindingbury
Tenningville
Sondwood
Kennway

Proposal will follow, just staking my claim

I propose that my company will run express trains from on the following routes:

Bington > Guningville > Getfingway-on-Sea > Pinnville > Nunington
Bington > Charfingley Market> Getfingway-on-Sea > Tenningville > Sondwood > Kennway
Bington > Guningville > Fort Fronwood
Bington > Charfingley Market > Great Trenighall > Condwood

Semi-express services on the following routes:

Bington > Charfingley Market> Getfingway-on-Sea > Tenningville
Bington > Grendinghall > Guningville > Grendinghead > Charfingley Market > Fort Fronwood
Flentfinghill > Great Trenighall > Kinnpool > Wrenbury > Charfingley Market > Getfingway-on-Sea

Local services on the following routes:

Nunington > Praningbury > Pinnville
Pindingbury > Fluningbury > Pinnville
Bington > Grendinghall > Guningville

Rolling Stock:

Express services will use the latest rolling stock with the fastest/most powerful locos available.
Semi-express services will use the secondary express locos or cascaded express locos.
Local services will use smaller tender locos, tank engines, multiple units or small diesel locos.

Stations:

Bington station will be the main station on the network with 8 platforms (initially) with 5, 6tile long platforms and 3, 4 tile long platforms to the north of the main platforms. The station will be called Bington Victoria
Gunningville will have 4 through platforms (2 each way) and 2 bay platforms facing towards Bington.
Pinnville with 6 platforms. 2 through on the Nunington line, 2 on the Sondwood line and 2 more for local services to terminate.
Chartfingley Market will be a triangular junction with initially 2 platforms, 4 on the line to Getfingway on sea, 2 on the line to Condwood and 2 on the link line between the two lines.

My aims: to provide a high quality express service from the 6 major towns on the map with good connections from smaller towns to the express services. To try and do every journey with as little number of changes as possible.

If it's just a passenger game, can't you turn industries off?
Personally I'd probably have just made big boxes over areas and said "operate in this area". That way there's more freedom than pre-chosing the routes.
But I do like the idea. Maybe I'll try something like it with the subsidies patch on a nightly.

The routes arent already predefined, possibly a bad display on my part, but the lines just show a possible connection between the cities that Franchise can operate in, track configurations on sectors that you operate on your own are completely up to you. :)

I offer to operate the red line. I will do this by running 1 train along the lines with a small feeder service to the junction. I will not give explanations as to any delays or cancelled services nor will I offer a trolley service. If anyone complains I reserve the right to ban them from my trains. I will bribe any local authority and come hell or high water I will win.

Train Company: Andelistan For Gold Weiners
3letter Op code: FGW

Hows that?

Green Line Proposal

McIntosh Railways (MCR)

Services:

Express:
Bington - Prindinghall - Tuftingway-On-Sea
Bington - Prindinghall - Mentingburg - Shordinghall

Local:
Bington - Tuftingway-On-Sea (all stops)
Bington - Kentfingley (all stops)

Branchlines:
Lentfingbridge - Slindborough - Lentfingbridge - Wudinghead Cross - Wonnpool - Wahill

McIntosh Railways aims to run quick, efficient service, using a variety of rolling stock, locos, and MU's. We like being nice to cities, and plan to offer bus routes into the center of town from the train station, if it is a sufficiently large town.

Playername: Jonty

Franchise Colour: Beige (Apparently)

Company Name: ArchAngel Networks (Don't sue me Harold)

Company Code (3 letters): AAN

Network Details:
Line terminii at Bington (Shared with Griff), Hendington, Treninbury and (initially) Flundingworth*.
Express terminus at Binningstone Bay / Pronnway and Bington, probably to be extended later on.

* The cost to build a bridge from Flundingworth to start with will probably be too high, so it will be a line extension until funds are collected.
Likewise, there won't be a bridge to Ronbourne and Treninbury.

Fleet Details:
Um, fast passenger trains from Bington to Binningstone Bay, which will probably be extended later. Cheaper but more frequent trains stopping at all the small stops!

Your Aims:
To provide an invaluable rail service to the South-West coast at an affordable price!

Oops, looks Owen beat me to it. Any procedures in place for competing bids? I could take a franchise for Bington city services if you wanted to make it separate from other operators.

I'll take pink then

So instead, they made their own game copy of my idea, limited it to 5 people without telling me so...
