Connex Melbourne EMU's

Post by Comeng 523M »

Hi everyone,

I was just asking if there is a Victorian (As in Australian) train set, in particular Melbourne Suburban. If none exists maybe I'll create my own, So what do I need to know?

There was an Australian Set in development, but I think it was mainly NSW.

What do you need to know for creating a set? Well, the first thing to do is compile a list of the vehicles you'll want to include, and get statistics for them. The second thing you'll need to do is draw and code your first vehicle. It all gets easier after that. :)

If you want to create your own train set, you'd need vehicles from 1920 to 2050, and about one new vehicle every 5 years, including MUs, Engines and Wagons. Then you gotta make a list of the pictures and stats. Pictures are used by artists to draw the sprites, stats are used by coders to code the sprites into a GRF file which can be used with TTDPatch and/or OpenTTD.

That's it very short. But the community is very short on coders.

You could just have those there as an accompaniment to the original game's set.

They look pretty well spaced.

That wouldn't work. It really wouldn't. The quality would be lost.

I didn't say that it was illegal to come up with an idea, I was just saying that trying to convert Loco graphics to TTD wouldn't work.

Illegal Alien once tried to render a 3D model of an ICE3, which he used to render LoMo-sprites, to TTD sprites. It wasn't really a succes IIRC. You'd still need to pixel-edit the sprites, and you'd probably better off pixelling from scratch.

Rendering sprites for TTD is perfectly feasible, but you have to start thinking about sprites right from the beginning, and create your models and textures with that in mind.

Okay, I can make the sprites myself. But I'll need a coder, and instructions on how to create the sprites (eg. Programs used, File format, things like that.)

I'll probably put in VicRail and V/Line rolling stock to make up the years and the diesel/steam component. I'll think about my own trains too, and possibly Monorail / MagLev.

Programs used: Whatever you want.
File format: 8-bit PNG, palette as found on the TTDPatch wiki (PalettesAndCoordinates)
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

You may find the following link useful for V/Line Locomotives. I'm not sure what your knowledge base is (mine is shocking for Victorian Stuff, I only know about Standard Gauge Victorian Stuff that has come over to NSW via QR National or Pacific National or one of the other operators).

Locopage

I hope you do include V'Line stock, specifically the V/locity. I quite like our Xplorer railcars, and the V/locity really looks like a step up from them (and rightly so, they are both Bombadier products).

The following may be of interest too:

I'm not sure of your standing in the Australian Railway community (again, NSWian here), but you can get questions answered over at Railpage Australia

My knowledge base for V/Line is pretty good for modern times, though I may struggle with the more "historical" locos. I am going to sign up to Railpage Australia shortly, and I have a "friend" over there who was banned recently from there...

Yes, he was asking for it!

If I was to include V/Line trains, I would definantly have A, B, L (Electric), N, P, and T loco's - plus the sprinters and VLocities.

Oh yes? Was he posting in the Victorian Section, or the TT section?

What was his username?
