Recent spam and moderation

Post by XeryusTC »

In the past week I've noticed that while doing my morning forum round that there is quite A LOT of spam in mainly the transportation section (there always seem to be 3 new topics by a spammer). Fortunately this is usually cleared by the next time that I check the forums (which is usually 8 hours later). The problem is that most of that spam has already been reported before I can and it seems to have been around for a few hours before I can see it. Maybe it is a good idea to complement the current moderation team with another moderator who lives in Asia or Australia so there is a more round the clock coverage of the forums.

I would say not. The last visited field of his profile is blank.

I agree, spam posted at that time seems to become more common and I made the same experience as XTC. Maybe you, robotboy, would be a good moderator? :-)

I will happily accept nominations if it comes to looking for a new moderator from a timezone similar to mine. I will partially take that back about Raichase as he has posted recently.

It seems after a week or so of no spam it's started again :(

Maybe it's just that I manage to miss it but I browse the forums, at least Off-Topic, OpenTTD section and screenshots, a few times every day and I don't run into the spam too often. Sure it happens once or twice every week, but it is more rare these days. I think the mods cope just fine as it is now

EDIT: Fine, the spam below this topic in this section has been here for over an hour and the European mods are asleep. Roboboy wins :P

Yes, and thus your lives can be complemented by people who live their life with a different time offset. It is not necessary though as most spam is gone soon enough but it is also an indication that there aren't moderators around 24/7 to handle possibly more serious cases that may appear.

My point still stands: you can appoint moderators from a different timezone but they will have a life too. Besides, the real issue is the increase of spam lately. It's not just you who are noticing it, it's been mentioned in the moderator section too.

Because this increase of spam coincided with me moving to Japan, I was wondering if it was just merely the fact that I was reading the forums while the mods were asleep. There does seem to be a unnaturally greater amount of spam though...

These things come and go, and it has not gotten really out of hand. It's not an awful experience seeing spam every now and then, and it is never there for more than a few hours at most

I also just got a spam mail to the email account i created for this forum and the openttd.org and never used somewhere else.
It looks like a newsletter but has links to several russian sites.
Got the Database hacked or how could this happen?

You should be able to toggle whether your email address is shown or not in your profile settings.
("User Control Panel" -> "Board Preferences" -> "Edit global settings" -> "Users can contact me by e-mail").

Then remove the button in UCP. If someone sends you a PM you will be notified by e-mail too if you want that. If they start sending spam by PM you can block them IIRC.
