That would be one place, you can also send me a PM
Edit: Or post here

Re: FreeRCT
As a massive RCT fan, I really like the idea. A few questions though. Are the people building this from scratch? Who are the rights for the original held by? When is the first Beta (or alpha) version set to be released? Who is working on it?
And how can I help.
Thanks.

Re: FreeRCT
Hi,

A bit of history:
I have been looking for a useful RCT program for many years, but never found anything that got anywhere useful.
Then timfrombriz posted http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=54638 . I responded by offering my help. Howver, since I don't have Windows and I don't like closed source, it needed to be rewritten.
A few weeks later I got a PM from Zephyris who was interested in making graphics.
Then, ..... nothing for a month or so iirc. Tim became very busy with real-life unfortunately. Also, openrct seemed to be used all over the place.
Zephyris and myself then decided to just start. The name FreeRCT was still free, it seemed, so we claimed it, and started the project.
Work in the code will move towards scenarios, 'research' of new rides, etc.
You can help with anything that does not exist yet.
Since we are not attached to the original title, we can move away from it, and make a much better game.

My DVD box says 'Atari', but we don't really care. Everything is created from scratch, we are not using anything from the original programs.thphwh wrote:Who are the rights for the original held by?
Somewhen in the future. With a C++ compiler, you should be able to build your own version however.thphwh wrote:When is the first Beta (or alpha) version set to be released?
Zephyris, myself, and anyone who contributes.thphwh wrote:Who is working on it?
Currently, there is nothing playable, you can start the program, do some simple terra forming and path building, and that's it. The code has to be extended to the point where you have enough basic functionality to have guests in a park. Then the amount of work in creating game data explodes to supply all the various types of things you tend to have in a park.thphwh wrote:And how can I help.

Re: FreeRCT
Just one last thing. There are lots of RCT fans, so you could publicise it in the Atari or similar pages on Facebook etc. I'm sure there are many coders and graphic artists among them. Just look at OTTD in its development, there were lots of people interested who could help.
Re: FreeRCT
I'm thinking Atari might not be too happy about that, despite the project being separatethphwh wrote:Just one last thing. Re: FreeRCT
Maybe on Unofficial RCT Facebook pages?

Re: FreeRCT
If anything, i hope this FreeRCT includes all of the old rides, and at least one new one, Wave Swinger. I so totally love them. (Yeah, i'm 22. I know)
I also hope it would have the scenery abilities of RCT2, where you can build nice themes and heighted objects.
Edit: Also, RCT is still an active franchise, with another game being worked on as we type. Have you thought of how Atari will react?

Re: FreeRCT
RCT3D will be a pile of turd. It's just RCT3 watered down so that it is playable on a small devices.

That's not the point. RCT is still an active franchise. Atari may seek to protect revenue.thphwh wrote:RCT3D will be a pile of turd. It's just RCT3 watered down so that it is playable on a small devices.
Re: FreeRCT
Well as long as they don't use any original graphics or any coding, they should be OK. Surely the name would be impending on a copyright.?
Re: FreeRCT
Yes, "Rollercoaster Tycoon" what Atari uses, is copyrighted of course. We don't use that term, the "RCT" in FreeRCT is not an abbreviation, like you seem to think.thphwh wrote:Surely the name would be impending on a copyright.?

Re: FreeRCT
But nearly everyone who has played it will immediately assume RCT stands is an abbreviation for RollerCoaster Tycoon. They're so memorable.
Re: FreeRCT
My thoughts exactly. Isn't RCT a copyright in its self?Jolteon wrote:But nearly everyone who has played it will immediately assume RCT stands is an abbreviation for RollerCoaster Tycoon. They're so memorable.
Edit: There is no copyright for RCT.
Re: FreeRCT
There are so many ways you can help! Trying to find skilled coders to donate some time would be very useful, and quite a challenge! Generally 'advertising' the project to raise awareness would also be great. You could also help document the features the game will be aiming for to help guide our work...thphwh wrote:And how can I help.

Hopefully you can confirm if it would have at least them? Re: FreeRCT
I will certainly be aiming for that, but that is a long-term content challenge! The priority for coding is to make the basic functioning game (paths, guests, a roller coaster, a gentle/thrill ride, a shop, some scenery). These will be coded in a suitably flexible way to allow loading of more content in a modular way, so the full range of rides and coasters can be designed later and loaded.Jolteon wrote:Hopefully you can confirm if it would have at least them? Re: FreeRCT
Very excited by the news of this project. Just wish I could help in some way. (Note, I have no coding ability).

It could stand for "Ride Creation Tool" or "Rollercoaster Creation Tool"Alberth wrote:Yes, "Rollercoaster Tycoon" what Atari uses, is copyrighted of course.
