While it is indeed a shame a man has died, he was: 1) in a coma for weeks if not months, and 2) not really a famous person as much as a man seen in a meme. I'm sure 90% of his "fans" have only ever heard the "Trololo" song. If this is the biggest celebrity death in your memory, buckethead, you might wanna look into finding new celebrities :P Ronnie James Dio, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Colin McRae and Amy Winehouse to mention a few

I have to say, I love that song. Simply because it's so ridiculously easy-listening. It's as if the Soviets had taken everything that could be possibly labelled 'prolefeed' and made a song out of it. And for that reason, it should be preserved in the archives of 'music that represents the human race'.

Well, it wouldn't be too nice of us.

The poor future archaeologists would find those archives and get trolled immediately.

I'd much rather have the rick roll for that :P

RIP Eduard Khil, everyone who is part of a meme (and as proud of it as he was) deserves to be remembered forever, or at least while the hivemind exists.

This guy is a lot more then you would think at first. He was actually an important person.

From what i gather, the trololo-song is in fact a protest against the censorship of communists. He was tired of all the songs that were named elegal because of their whatever-the-regime-didn't-like so he made a song containing no lyrics as a silent protest that passed trough the censorship walls. So it is actually meaningful music.

Besides: You should really listen to this. He sings very nice stuff as well!

Edit: For a better impression of the song, do press the interactive transcription button next to the share and favorite butons etc. Gives english subtitles. :)

I have to admit, this topic made no sense to me. I just went and watched this "trololo" thing on YouTube, and I'm still not entirely sure what all the fuss is about.

I gather "trololo" is a meme, but I was not aware of this video. It somehow passed me by. That said, Internet memes tend to be increasingly banal these days... </old git>

We're actually past the fall of memes, they only survive on Facebook (those people are so slow they just registered rage faces exist). Internet superpowers, reddit and 4chan, already exhausted them in a similar fashion as we exhaust oil reserves.

It seems like you don't understand how memes work. They are all very temporary. All your base, the rickroll, trololo and cats are some of the most widespread memes and they live on longer than most others. Many other memes disappear from the internet soon after they've started, but instead they'll be replaced by new memes. To my surprise though the ragecomics have survived very long (long past their due date imo, that s*** hasn't been funny since a long time) due to 9gag and the stupid unoriginal community behind it.

Memes will never stop to exist as long as there is an internet where people don't take stuff serious. Even tt-forums has at least 3 memes that I can name right away ;) and possibly much more than that.

What, I thought no such thing as a foolish meme could be born here, in this fine and refined environment.

And from what I gather at reddit, once they realize a common joke is becoming a meme, they slaugher it with no mercy (see "arrow in the knee"). It's like they realized the importance of meaningful comments. But contrary to this, the quality of all subreddits is decreasing. Those poor people suddenly have nothing to post, so instead of new memes it's all old, but meme free content.

The "it's not me in my avatar" thing, 153 311 and jesting (oh, the good old days) could all be considered memes. I have seen sites where even often displayed ads became memes in the end.
The term meme is quite a fuzzy one IMO, even if you take the original meaning by Daniel Dennett which is "an idea, behaviour or style that speads from person to person within a culture", but that definition doesn't really fit the memes on the internet IMO, the words "viral joke" would apply more here.

I thought it originally went back to Dawkins? I'm not sure. I did read Dennett but that was for the his idea of 'the universal acid': “it eats through just about every traditional concept, and leaves in its wake a revolutionized world-view, with most of the old landmarks still recognizable, but transformed in fundamental ways.” (much like Alan Fry on this forum with every thread he touches).
