RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 on Windows 7

Post by Chrill »

While this combination actually runs quite well, I have encountered an issue. I cannot use the in-game Screenshot feature of RCT2. The picture does not save to the location it should, because the computer needs "Admin permission" to save to C:/Program Files/ in Windows 7. Therefore (and this is my assumption), the picture does not save whatsoever. How can I manage to take screenshots of my RCT2 game on Windows 7? I have tried simple PrintScreening, it does not work. I have also tried downloading a Screenshot Software, but it generates nothing but a fully black image

Maybe run RCT2 "as administrator"?

That should work, if not, also make sure the RCT2 folder or screenshot folder is not set to read-only :)

Now, I do not know what occurred, but my savegame disappeared after setting it to run as administrator. Foul, vicious, computer. It is trying its utmost to make me go insane :P

WTF? Is it gone from the in-game list or completely disappeared from the folder? Perhaps it never even saved in the first place due to a read-only folder setting?

The savegame was there, I started yesterday and continued playing today. It disappeared from the folder entirely. I actually loaded it up perhaps half an hour before posting my issue here. After setting the game as run in admin mode, and starting the game, the savegame had gone

Hmmm. I don't remember where RCT2 saves the er... savegames but it looks like that it saves them to somewhere in your profile folder. Therefore when you run RCT2 as administrator the savegame is saved to the admin account's profile folder and so you can't find your saves which you made when you ran RCT2 as a regular user.

However, if RCT2 doesn't save the savegames to the profile folder then I don't know what's the problem.

The screenshot problem can be solved also by changing the permissions of the RCT2 folder so then you don't have to run the game as administrator.

Screenshots work! I will look into what you said, Tyyppi, to see if the savegame was somehow moved

If you see your savegames when you're logged in as 'ordinary user' and don't see them when running a certain program 'as administrator' while still being logged in as the same user, then it's the overprotective Vista/W7 policy of fooling you (and the program) that is at work!

If a program is marked for compatibility with older Windows (i.e. not W7-ready), Windows will let the program write to what the program believes is C:\Program\RCT\Savegames (for example), while in reality the file is saved in C:\<long, deep file hierarchy which I don't remember exactly but including the user name>\C\Program\RCT\Savegames. As long as you are logged in as that user, you will also see the files where you believe them to be, but when logged in as an administrator you will see the files where they actually resides on the disc.

Or rather *not* see the files, unless you've told W7 to display it's deepest secrets ("Show hidden files" etc.).

The best way to install programs that are not really made for Vista/W7 is to not use "C:\Program", but create a separate folder "C:\GamlaProgram" and install them there instead.

Have a look in C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86) for a RCT2 folder with saved games in it. Windows 7 uses that folder to store information from games that have not been given permission to write to their own folders and if they also came out prior to the whole 'save your games in (My) Documents' scheme of things.

Sorry for digging this old thread up but I just wanted to thank Nite Owl. I couldn't find my old save games anywhere on my Windows disk but found them because this thread popped up in my Google results :)
