TRANSPORT TYCOON FORUMS NEWSLETTER: JULY 2005
Welcome to the July 2005 issue of the Transport Tycoon Forums Newsletter! This is a very important month indeed, as it is my 18th birthday on the 9th, so I'll be expecting your greetings and presents. I hope you enjoy this regular round-up of news from the Transport Tycoon world.
If you're reading this on the forum and would like to receive a copy by e-mail each month, visit http://tt-forums.net/mailman/listinfo/n ... forums.net or send an e-mail to news-request@tt-forums.net with the subject "subscribe" - an ideal way of keeping up-to-date with the latest news and important announcements on the forum. Traffic is low, and your e-mail address is kept private.
As usual, statistics first... June was a slightly quieter month than May, with some 10,078 messages posted last month - around 335 a day on average, and a couple of thousand less than May. User registrations were also down a bit - 274 users signed up this past month. I guess people are taking advantage of the sunshine that June brings! (Although it seems the weather down south is rather weird at the moment - it's quite normal and nice up here in Orkney!) On to some other statistics now: we had some 7.1 million hits last month, a million down on May, but a million up on April. 58GB of bandwidth was used, only a few gigabytes down from last month. This equals some 61,200 individual visits (only a few thousand fewer than last month), with the 13th being the most active day - 274,513 hits were recorded that day. In the country/domain chart, things aren't too different from usual: unknown domains account for 60% of hits, followed by .nl, .net, .com, .uk, .cz, .pl, .hu, .au, .de, .fi, .ru, .no, .dk, .sg, .se, .yu, .at, .nz, .ca, .hk, .be, .li, .pt, .et, .ch, .org, .sk, .edu and finally .fr at #30. IE is the most popular browser again, although Mozilla on OS/2 is still third in the charts, Rob! Most people who found us via a search engine searched for "transport tycoon", and we had referrals from all over the place. No marmots were harmed during the production of these statistics.
On to the Off-Topic forum now, and our favourite forum comedian _r_ has this witty round-up of recent events:
"Summer. It always brings out the ladies, with their skimpy tops, and skimpy bottoms, and exposed midriffs. It just makes you want to throw your hands in the air and thank God for women's liberation. Not here, it would seem, where everyone would rather sit inside on the Internet until that horrible hot yellow thing in the sky goes down behind those big, leafy, green things. However, on the topic of meteorology, it was agreed that thunder, whilst loud and very dangerous, is a Good Thing.
Elsewhere, that joy that is Big Brother had started, leading to a thread which is quite literally off the hook. Also this month we were treated to the sight of forum regular Bastiaan eating a flower - well, why not? - and a Monty Python thread, celebrating the genius that is that particular venomous snake. Yours truly augmented the Pretty Girls thread with fully-clothed pictures of Georgian melodic popstress Katie Melua.
The world is full of interesting facts. Did you know, for instance, that any particle, provided that the product of its mass and energy does not exceed the Planck constant, can also exist as a wave? The Really Fun Questionnaire provided some similar results. It seems that the majority of this forum is under 25, male and single, often with a taste for hard house and/or death metal.
And some member called Owen reached his 10,000th post. The biggest news, however, is that Pink Floyd have reformed, complete with Roger Waters. Nothing to do with TT-Forums, but this is meant to be off-topic, isn't it?"
On the topic of myself, don't forget about my upcoming birthday! First 10 people to post get a free post on tt-forums!
Anyway, Locomotion now, and more work has been done on various new objects and graphics, including an Aircraft Pack and a new Cargo Airport. Check out the Loco forums, and don't forget about Steve's new "Locomotion Cache" site, which you can read about in the Graphics, Modifications & Tools forum.
On to the Transport Tycoon forums now, and Jim Powers released an excellent new scenario, "Bold British Columbia" - be sure to check that out for a great challenge. The Pictures of your Games topic is as busy as ever, with a number of new shots from the master of screenshots, Raichase, and other users.
TTDPatch, and a number of alpha versions were released - alphas 51, 52 and 53. A major new feature in alpha 51 is an enhancement to experimental cooperative gameplay, by Aegir, which causes AI companies who you own 75% of to be inactive (ie, they won't mess up your routes!). TTDPatch is now compatible with Windows XP x64 Edition, among other things. Alphas 52 and 53 are mainly bugfixes, with PBS and so on. In other news, Oskar is working on a new shell extension for Windows which will allow users to find their desired saved games more easily from within Explorer - keep an eye out on that, hopefully it'll work quite well! In the Graphics forum, things have been as busy as ever. Many established sets have continued progressing towards a first release or bugfix releases, and a few new sets, such as the Arctic Renewal Set or the Tropic Refurbishment Set have been started. Remember that some sets are still a long way from completion and require help. Some of these sets are as follows:
- Japan Project

- UK Renewal Set

Apologies if any other sets have been missed out: check out the Graphics forum and see them for yourself! Or, if there's a particular graphic you're looking for, check out GRFCrawler (http://grfcrawler.tt-forums.net/), a site developed and run by eis_os.
In the OpenTTD world, many more bug fixes and tweaks were made to the code following the release of OpenTTD 0.4.0 and 0.4.0.1. HackyKid in particular has been working on improving newgrf support, which is helping to bring OpenTTD up to par with TTDPatch on that front. In the OpenTTD Graphics forum, Mek has got a very rough version of OpenTTD working with 32-bit graphics, and work on that is progressing well, with Alltaken coordinating the effort to create new high quality graphics for the game - it should be very interesting to see how this turns out. A variety of patches and discussions went on in the OpenTTD Development forum this month, too, so check that out if you're interested in the cutting edge of OpenTTD!
Moving on to Transport Empire, after the good progress that was made in the first quarter of the year, development has halted a bit. People are currently waiting for uzurpator and Hellfire to summarize the various discussions that have been had and come up with a coherent game description. In the mean time, work is also progressing on the Transport Empire web site.
In the Simutrans world, version 86.05 has been released, and there has been some news on even higher quality new graphics for Simutrans, which is well worth a visit.
And finally, around 22 multiposts or topics were moved into the Spam Bin this month. It's an interesting place, the Spam Bin, actually...
Well, that's yet another month done, again a slightly shorter newsletter this time... around 1,300 words, compared with 1,500 last month! I'm off to watch James Bond in a bit, so I'll say goodbye now. And don't forget to donate, many thanks to all those users who have! Thanks to your generous donations, I was able to upgrade the server's memory to 1GB, which has helped greatly with the stability and speed problems we were recently experiencing. Donations are gratefully accepted, by PayPal, MoneyBookers or other means (contact me privately). Alternatively, consider buying something from my Amazon UK link (http://www.owenrudge.net/amazon/). Your support is appreciated.
And don't forget my birthday!
